The DOME of San CERBONE CATHEDRAL, MASSA MARITTIMA – GROSSETO

The consolidation of supporting masonry outside, and the frescoes in the interior of the dome of the Cathedral of San Cerbone by PIACENTI Spa was a complex intervention that necessitated the collaboration of numerous specialized workers. The most complex phases of the work were those related to the structural consolidation of the supporting wall of the dome. It was done with precision hoops performing core holes and inserting rods in order to restore a structural strength that avoided the collapse that threatened to destroy the vaults of the dome.  At the same time a team of expert restorers brought to light and restored the twelfth century paintings decorating the dome that had been covered by layers of plaster and calcium deposits.
Intervention summarized in macrophases :
– Structural consolidation works;
– Restoration of the outer wall in brick;
– Restoration work on plaster and pictorial surfaces;
